Personal Property

Every Marion County Citizen is required by law to file an annual Personal Property Assessment as of the first day of July of each year.

The Assessor mails your assessment form pre-printed to you every assessment season, providing you have filed the previous year.  If you do not receive a form in the mail, this indicates that you are not up-to-date in filing your Personal Property Return and you should contact our office immediately

We have provided the two-page assessment form that you may print from your computer and mail to us.  Please follow these instructions for completing the form that you print from our website or receive in the mail:

Print the required name and address information.  If you have a previous personal property tax ticket, you may take the “Account No.” and “Tax District” information from it.  Social Security number is not required.

Each schedule refers to personal property you own on July 1st.  For any schedule that does not apply to you, write “None” across the blanks.

             Page1:

Schedule 1: List each piece of farm equipment you own (tractors, balers, hay rakes, etc.) and provide the year of manufacture for each.  If you don’t know the year of manufacture, provide the purchase year and cost.

Schedule 2: Farm animals: list quantity and specify type (for example, calves, heifers, or cows, horses, colts, or ponies).

Schedule 3: You do not need to list farm products here.  If you own a farm whose products yield an income of at least $1000 annually, you may qualify for a farm operator’s tax discount.  After July 1, contact the Assessor’s Office to request the Assessor’s Farm Statistics form. This form must be filed with the Assessor by Sept. 1.

Schedule 4: This is the most important part of the assessment.  Provide the make, model, year, and VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for every car or truck titled to you – including those not licensed or driven - as of July 1st.  You can find the VIN on your vehicle’s registration card or insurance card.  Also, list any boats or aircraft under Schedule 5.

 ·        If you lease a vehicle, contact your leasing company to verify that they report your vehicle to us.  If they do, omit it from your assessment.  This will prevent a double billing.

·        For Antique Vehicles (25 years old or older), list the condition of the vehicle (drive-able, poor to excellent condition, restorable, in parts, etc.).  Under the “Owner’s Value” write the price you would ask for if you were to sell it.

·        For Trucks, we need to know the length of the bed; also, indicate whether or not it has an extended cab and if it has a flare or straight bed.

·        For Aircraft, please verify the make, model, model number, and registration number (i.e. N12345), and give the aircraft location.  Please list any of the above not preprinted on the form.  For additional information, call 367-5413.

·        For Boats, we need to know the length, make, model, and year; also, indicate whether it is outboard or inboard and if it is fiberglass or aluminum.

Schedule 5 Provide information about other personal property:

 ·        For Utility trailers, Stock Trailers, Boat Trailers, Motor Homes, Personal Watercraft (example: Jet Ski; Wave Runner), and Camping Trailers, we must have the name, year, length, and series.  Please also include purchase year and cost and, in the case of boat trailers, tell us if it is a single or double-axle trailer.

·        For Motorcycles, including 3- and 4-wheelers, we need the make, model, year, size (CC’s), and style.

Schedule 6: For information about mobile home(s) you own.  Be sure to indicate whether you or someone else (provide name) owns the land on which it sits, and tell us if the mobile home is your residence. Fill in the “Real ID” blank if you know the district, map and parcel number for the mobile home’s location.

For any of the above schedules, please attach a separate sheet of paper if you own more items than will fit on the form.

You do not need to fill in the section marked “List of Real Estate Owned.”  Landowners will receive real estate tax tickets regardless.  However, be sure to complete the section below it if you have built or remodeled during the past year.

Dogs owned on July 1, and that are 6 months old or older, must be listed on this form. For fee information, click here.

Finally, sign and date the form and mail it to Marion County Assessor
